Thank you to Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) for sponsoring this meeting.

Carolyn McClanahan: Health care planning is a significant unknown for financial planners and their clients. Organizations such as Fidelity and Employee Benefit Research Institute offer averages, and we know there is rarely an average person. Dr. McClanahan helps you refine how to plan for this unknown and how to effectively use health care information in various aspects of the planning process by:
  1. Teaching you how to have easy and informative discussions with clients about health issues and how these issues may impact client planning
  2. Understanding the client's health care mindset so they can understand their part in controlling health care costs
  3. Showing you how to incorporate the client's health care status with insurance planning, income planning, and advance directive planning

Andrew Fisher: Due to the ever increasing globalization of business, there exists a large and growing demographic of international and cross-border professionals who have a connection in some way to the United States. These individuals, whether they are foreign citizens living in the U.S., American expatriates, or non-resident aliens with assets in the U.S., have complicated financial affairs and they often have nowhere to turn for advice on important financial questions. The goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of the cross-border demographic, then to examine the most common financial challenges faced by these individuals and families. Various issues will be outlined in detail, along with recommendations for best practices and optimal wealth planning. Key areas of focus will include investing, real estate, taxes and retirement planning.

Bryce Skaff: Whether investors feel whipsawed by the fluctuations of markets or unnerved by the latest bit of news, they often forget that investing is a choice--as is the way they respond to the incites. Which path investors choose not only determines the outcome, but also their journey along the way.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Skaff will:
  • Discuss how an approach to investing can empower people to make choices that reduce stress and improve their lives
  • Explore the crucial role that great financial advisors play in helping clients receive an outstanding investor experience

Speaker(s):

Incorporating Health Care into Planning, Carolyn McClanahan

Carolyn McClanahan, M.D., CFP is the founder of Life Planning Partners, Inc.

Dr. McClanahan began her career as a physician in private practice and emergency medicine. In 2000, finding that most financial planners were mainly interested in managing her portfolio and not in providing the advice she needed, she enrolled in the CFP curriculum to learn more about financial planning. Realizing the similarities between medicine and financial planning, and feeling more empowered by being able to help people plan for their future, Dr. McClanahan decided to make a career change into financial planning.

In addition to her financial life planning practice, Dr. McClanahan speaks regularly on the interplay between health and financial issues, particularly regarding aging, long term care issues, health care costs, and health care reform. She writes for Forbes, Money, CNBC, and Financial Planning Magazine covering issues intersecting money and medicine.

Dr. McClanahan is a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA,) the Financial Planning Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. She is quoted regularly in numerous publications such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and the Washington Post. She has also appeared on CNBC, Hardball, AC360, Nightly Business Report, and NPR.

Wealth Planning for Cross-Border Families, Andrew Fisher

Andrew Fisher is widely regarded as a leading wealth advisor to cross-border families. He frequently writes and speaks to the unique financial planning and investment complexities faced by international families, particularly when an individual is a tax resident of the United States. He is also the author of The Cross-Border Family Wealth Guide, to be released January 2017 by Wiley.

With a broad base of experience in international investing, taxation and wealth planning, Andrew enjoys helping clients find creative solutions to complex financial problems. More than having all the answers, he prides himself on being able to identify the most critical financial questions clients face and then build a team of experts to find solutions.

Andrew is the president and founder of Worldview Wealth Advisors, an independent wealth management firm advising globally oriented families-both Americans living abroad and foreign citizens living in the U.S. In addition to leading the investment team, Andrew serves as senior client advisor. In this role, he assists families with their complex, multinational affairs, seeking to optimize wealth, which is often located in multiple countries.

When out of the office, Andrew can be found enjoying the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and three children.

The Enlightened Investor, Bryce Skaff

Skaff leads the Strategic Relationship group, which partners with the largest US-based FAS clients, including RIA firms, bank/trust organizations, and Turnkey Asset Management Programs (TAMPs). Bryce oversees Santa Monica FAS operations, including compliance, group structure, recruiting, and general administration. As part of the FAS Steering and Marketing committees, Bryce helps provide strategic direction and leads select initiatives for the US FAS group.

He supervised Dimensional's Latin American business with advisors and institutional investors for many years prior to refocusing efforts in the US.

Prior to joining Dimensional, he traded mortgage-backed securities for Provident Funding.
A CFA Charterholder, Bryce joined Dimensional in 1998. He obtained an MBA from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA in finance from Santa Clara University
